'EU phone home' - Conservative MEP hails end of exorbitant mobile bills when travelling

Conservative MEP for the East of England Vicky Ford has welcomed EU legislation which significantly caps data roaming bills when travelling in Europe.

Customers using their mobile phones in another EU country need no longer worry about running up such huge bills when surfing the web using mobile networks. Mobile roaming call charges are to be reduced further and operators will have to impose a monthly default cut-off for data roaming of around 40 GBP.

Vicky said,

"We have all heard the horror stories about mobile data charges when travelling abroad - that first phone bill after coming back from holiday can often be a real shock. These new rules will prevent UK consumers being charged horrific rates and provide clarity about how much we are actually spending when using our phones elsewhere in Europe.

I am delighted that these much-needed reforms have finally come into effect - families and businesses across the East of England will now have far greater certainty over the mobile charges they will incur while travelling in Europe."
