Vicky Ford MEP, Geoffery Van Orden MEP and Robert Sturdy MEP Call on Euro Commission to stand up for Vauxhall jobs.
In a strongly worded letter the three Conservative euro MEP's from the East of England have demanded that the European commission levels the playing field for the Vauxhall plant workers in Luton.
In their letter they go on to say,
"It is absolutely unacceptable that such restructuring be motivated by anything other than the efficiency of the production plants concerned. Despite your reassuring comments to us on the fourteenth of September we remain anxious that the German government's lead in financing the deal may have an undue influence on the shape of the subsequent restructuring.
"We have every confidence in the modernity and efficiency of Vauxhall's plant in Luton, and the high standards of its workforce. The German publication Der Spiegel has repeatedly reported that the Commission has access to documents comparing the relative efficiency of Opel/Vauxhall's plants across Europe (specifically comparing Antwerp to Bochum). Can you categorically confirm whether such documents do exist?
"We would also call on the Commission to act with all haste in its efforts to analyse the proposed deal and suggest a timeframe for conclusions. Any delay brings yet more uncertainty to a great number of our constituents linked directly and indirectly to the factory at Luton".
Commenting further the three MEPs said "It would be completely unfair if jobs are lost in Luton because of subsidies elsewhere. It is against the law for European Governments to subsidise their own national operations at the expense of others. The commission is meant to act as the policeman and make sure that these laws are stuck to. As MEPs we are doing what we can in Brussels to fight for a level playing field for workers in Luton and across the UK".
