Horse racing and breeding: local MEPs support the industry Horseracing and breeding is an important part of the East of England's economy, with Newmarket, the historic home of horseracing, employing 7,000 people. Concerned about new EU regulations, members of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association visited Brussels yesterday (13 October) to see local MEPs Geoffrey Van Orden and Vicky Ford. They met previously in Newmarket in May. The Breeders voiced concerns about proposals to widen the scope of EU regulations concerning the transport of animals and about complete deregulation of gambling without consideration of the impact on racing. They wanted to ensure a fair return of money from gambling to the horse racing industry. "We want good prize money for British racing - this drives the industry", commented Rhydian Morgan-Jones of the Thoroughbred Breeders' Council. Geoffrey Van Orden said: "We have always been very strong on animal welfare issues, pushing for tougher controls on conditions in which animals are transported for slaughter. "But the distinction has to be made between the transportation of animals for slaughter and 'registered' horses which are moved for other reasons. The thoroughbred owners have a vested interest in the welfare of their horses. "We do not need more regulation but proper enforcement of current rules. We shall press this point with the European Commission." Vicky Ford, who lives near Newmarket and who is a long-time supporter of the industry, said, "It was extremely helpful to meet with leading vets and welfare experts as well as with breeding and racing experts. There have been tragic stories about the poor treatment of animals transported across the continent for slaughter and horse-lovers are right to be concerned. "However, any new EU rules should not be allowed to put uniform and impractical restraints on the very high quality treatment offered to UK thoroughbreds. We want to continue to be a world name in breeding and racing."
